The Dorm

ROOMS

The rooms at Tietgenkollegiet differ from older and more traditional student housing in both shape and size.

How we live

All 360 rooms are placed along the outer edge of the circular building. This design ensures each resident has a sense of privacy when in their room. The characteristic shape of the rooms widens from the entrance towards the window, creating a spacious and light-filled atmosphere.

Spacious room

The smallest single rooms are 26 m². Other single rooms measure 29 m² and 33 m². Thirty of the residences are two-room apartments, well-suited for couples or students who want extra space. All double rooms are 45 m².

Every room has a large bathroom with floor heating, a toilet, and a shower.

Rooms also come with built-in storage cupboards along the ceiling, a closed shelving unit, and a movable wardrobe that function as a room divider.

No matter the size, all rooms feature large windows that open to either a French balcony or a full balcony. Whichever type you choose, you will have a feeling of space and light around you.

About 60 of the rooms are reserved for international students on exchange in Copenhagen. While standard rooms are furnished by the residents themselves, international rooms come fully furnished.

KITCHENS & COMMON ROOMS

Life at Tietgenkollegiet is all about community, and our shared spaces reflect that. We take pride in offering exceptionally well-equipped facilities, both locally on each floor and for the entire dorm

Kitchens – the hub of student life

The kitchen is the heart of dorm life. At Tietgenkollegiet, 12 residents share one spacious kitchen, equipped with tableware, cooking utensils, 4 refrigerators, 2 ovens, and a large extractor to ensure a healthy indoor climate—even when everyone is cooking at once. Each resident has their own cupboard for food and kitchen gear.

Kitchens are furnished with large dining tables and chairs, often complemented with furniture collected by residents over time, giving each kitchen its own character. Each kitchen also has a utility room with a sink and space to hang laundry.

Common rooms

Attached to each kitchen is an extra room, known simply as the “common room.” While each of the 30 common rooms is linked to one kitchen, they are open to all residents, encouraging people to spend time beyond their own corridor.

Over time, many of the common rooms have developed their own identities and uses. You’ll find small cinemas, various types of gaming rooms, and even an “English Library Room” with Chesterfield sofas. Many are equipped with TVs, lounge seating, or worktables for group projects.

OTHER SHARED FACILITIES

Most of the ground floor is dedicated to shared facilities for all residents.

The laundry room and bicycle parking

The laundry and bicycle parking are essential in any dorm, but at Tietgenkollegiet they are given extra attention. Located in the ground floor with large windows, they are well-lit at all hours. The laundry room is colorful, and the three bicycle storage areas are heated.

The event hall and reading room

The residence also has a large event hall with canal views. It can be flexibly divided, and the movable bar counters on wheels make it possible to host either one large party or up to three smaller events at once.

Study life matters too. The reading room provides a quiet space for studying and writing, while group rooms can be booked for collaboration. There’s also a computer room with printers, scanners, and copiers.

Music rooms, workshops, and the gym

Creativity has space to thrive here: the ground floor houses two music rooms—one classical with a grand piano, and one rhythmic with drums, amps, and microphones. There are also three workshops for sewing, woodworking, and bicycle repair, as well as a gym.

Outdoor facilities

Outdoor facilities include a lit basketball court, a pétanque court, and a ping-pong table. Behind the building, two barbecue areas are popular in summer, and the rooftops of the kitchen and common-room blocks in the courtyard offer sun-filled terraces.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Tietgenkollegiet is located in Ørestad North, a lively district home to the University of Copenhagen (Amager campus), the IT University, DMJX, and Denmark’s national broadcaster DR, alongside residential buildings.

Close to student life, the city, and nature

The area is defined by its characteristic canals, which in summer become gathering places for students from nearby universities.

The residence is close to Islands Brygge, a popular destination with its harbor bath, shops, and restaurants. Nearby metro stations provide quick connections to central Copenhagen, while the protected Amager Fælled nature reserve is just a short walk away – perfect for a run, a stroll, or a quiet moment.
